Now or Never (excerpt), stop-action animation,
paint on canvas, 6'06"
This project strives to depict a collection of dreams by conducting contingent experiments with coded symbolic materials, exploring their possible influences.
Developed concurrently, the short film portrays images and stories based on my dreams from two consecutive nights.
The animation on the left side is based on dreams collected on a night where I had consumed traditional Ethiopian meals throughout the day and slept on an Ethiopian flag pillow case. The animation on the right side is based on the collection of dreams from a night where I had consumed my usual diet and slept on an American flag pillow case. Dream fragments were voice recorded during short intervals of wakefulness throughout both nights.
Painted scenes were documented while rotating the camera counterclockwise. This action was initially inspired by the centrifugal scenes in the 2001 Space Odyssey, to destabilize the animation and remove gravitational orientation.
