When we all met (Excerpt): Stop action animation, mixed materials on mylar, 3' 54"

"When we all met" is based on my experience of all the members of my family being reunited after several years of separation and having grown up in three different continents.

I used graphite pencil, acrylic paint, modernized traditional fabrics and photo collage on Mylar. Mylar's plastic surface allows graphite pencil marks to float over the ground, which facilitates erasure and allows subsequent scenes to develop. To make this animation I photographed a drawing then erased it and drew over the same surface for the next frame.

In this animation, scenes are constructed and then deconstructed, collaged then decollaged. This process allowed me to keep the past while moving forward. I used sounds collected from the actual moment of meeting and our conversations.

This project was a means to process and explore the layered meanings that automate from the migratory experience and how one can find ideas of the self and belonging.
